Space Debris

The theoretical part of the diploma thesis focuses on the characterization of the artificial space debris in Earth's orbit. The methods of debris removal, the space debris mitigation guidelines, and related international documents are elaborated. In addition to, detection and monitoring of the orbital population are briefly described. The practical part of the thesis proposes a new method of debris removal which is aimed at CubeSat after mission ending in low earth orbit. The method consists of deorbiting maneuver, which is calculated, and the solid rocket motor for the maneuver performance. This includes the computation of dimensions of the solid rocket motor and the propellant configuration.
Vibration and impact measurement for collision analysis

This bachelor’s thesis deals with the issue of CubeSat collision and detection with microscopic particles of space debris and meteoroids. The aim of the thesis is to approach methods of detection, to describe various sensors for measurement of acoustic emission, shock and vibrations caused by collisions and by experimental comparison determine the suitability of their application. The thesis also contains description of possible methods of data analysis using amplitude and spectral analysis. Finally, there is a suggestion and realization of a possible way of processing acquired data from a sensor using an FPGA.
Influence of space debris on satellites design

Bakalárska práca sumarizuje problém kozmického odpadu a jeho vplyvu na konštrukciu satelitov. Hlavným cieľom práce je spojiť teoretické poznatky získané skúmaním a experimentami s ich praktickou implementáciou v konštrukčnom prístupe zvanom „design for debris“. Práca sa v teoretickej časti venuje charakteristikám kozmického odpadu. Poznatky uvedené v tejto časti musia byt zohľadnené pri návrhu misie a konštrukcie satelitu. Praktická časť práce demonštruje prístup „design for debris“ na modelovej prípadovej štúdii. Konštrukčný prístup je založený na zisteniach analýzy Micro Meteriod a Orbital Debris, ktoré opisujú interakciu častíc odpadu so satelitom počas plánovaného obdobia misie. Analýza udáva obraz o populácii odpadu na vybranej obežnej dráhe, a taktiež odhaľuje zraniteľné miesta konštrukcie. Získané dáta spolu so znalosťami problematiky umožňujú navrhnúť konštrukčné alebo orbitálne úpravy, ktoré znížia pravdepodobnosť straty misie v dôsledku kolízie s odpadom.

Legal issues of space debris remediation Abstract Space activities are growing, and outer space is becoming congested to a point where space debris remediation is needed to ensure a sustainable outer space environment. However, space treaties do not take space debris remediation into account. This thesis analyses legal issues of space debris remediation as one of the most pressing matters of space law. The author aims to answer whether current space law provides a sufficient framework for space debris remediation by analysing the issues of perpetual ownership, liability, registration, and transfer of ownership. Ownership of space objects is permanent under the Outer Space Treaty, this also applies to space debris, which complicates its remediation in certain cases. Obtaining permission is not a viable solution when the owner is unknown. Abandonment is discussed as a solution to the ownership problem. Transfer of ownership is also complicated as liability for damage cannot be transferred, neither can jurisdiction and control when the transferee is a non-launching State. Emerging Threats to Space Security and Protection of Space Assets

The dissertation entitled "Emerging Threats to Space Security and Protection of Space Assets" introduces outer space as an important strategic domain with undisputable significance for the present and future of humankind. Despite the specific features of space environment, it explains that the outer space domain is not entirely divergent from traditional terrestrial domains and space-provided services are part of everyday life. The dissertation discusses and analyses the threats to space security and proposes countermeasures to mitigate the negative consequences on the space environment and for human activities beyond the borders of Earth, contributing to the spacepower theory and shaping the approach to outer space as an economic and political area. The dissertation illustrates the complexity of space threats and urges they be resolved. The theoretical framework is based on realist assumptions; however, it broadly acknowledges the different roles of various space stakeholders, resulting in an eclectic approach to space relations. Accordingly, the dissertation elaborates on dynamics and interconnections between space actors and outlines the prospects for future cooperation that is vital for preserving the space environment.

Weaponization of Outer Space: Double-Edged Blade of Dual-Use Technology

The thesis considered the feasibility of space warfare with an emphasis on the malicious potential of dual-use technology. I have described the orbital principles and set the presumptions of space warfare and the principles for space warfare strategy, introduced dual- use technology and its connections to space weapons, elaborated on existing counterspace capabilities and its impact, described the challenges for space warfare and evaluated the utilization of dual-use technology as space weapons. I have reached the conclusion that current space technology does not allow to lead extensive space warfare. However, counterspace technology is mature enough for the conduct of destructive space operations and states are encouraged to proliferate advanced offensive counterspace capabilities that are not sufficiently addressed and bounded to international law. Though, despite it seems space warfare is unlikely, the growing tensions of state space actors and rapid development of new technology that is currently mostly driven by the commercial actors may soon change the situation. Potentially destructive dual-use technology may then increase the risk and probability of space warfare. The thesis proposed several options of potentially destructive dual-technology technology that could be turned into space weapons.

Bohumil Doboš, Ph.D. Year of the defence: 2021 Abstract The sustainability of the outer space environment is necessary for all actors to execute all existing and future human space operations safely. While the severe negative consequences of the uncontrolled space debris population are not new, government agencies and intergovernmental organizations' initiatives to lessen the predicament continue to be insufficient. Scientific research and simulation models show that mere mitigation measures cannot stop the ongoing degradation of the outer space environment polluted from the past space missions. Instead, research supports the development of space projects designed with a primary objective to remove debris from space. National administrations attempt to cooperate at the international level to formulate uniform debris mitigation standards and hold each other mutually accountable for worsening the space debris situation.
